Capitol Code

Capitol Code is a mystery novel about a shy young Asian American girl, Leili Teng, trying to fit into a new life in a new city. Leili finds herself in the center of a government corruption scandal of Internet theft and the issue of citizen privacy versus national security.

On her 13th birthday, Leili Teng moves to Washington, D.C.. The action takes place in and around some of the most famous buildings, monuments and scenic places in Washington. Capitol Code gives the reader insight into the significance of these places and what they mean to the national identity. In several passages of the book, Leili reflects on what it means to be Chinese American. As events unfold around her, we see Leili growing in confidence even as her challenges get more difficult. Most importantly, she learns to trust herself and others.

My husband and I lived in Washington for ten years when our four children were growing up. We explored the places visited by Leili Teng with lasting benefits in our appreciation of these historic places. It is my hope that Capitol Code may spur curiosity about the nation’s historic sites and interest in the issues of privacy and security for other young people.
